Lectures

Goal

The objective of the course is to provide students with knowledge and practical skills in the application of modern computational tools for ship design, analysis, and optimization. Students will develop competencies in the use of specialized software packages for hull geometry modeling, hydrostatic and hydrodynamic calculations, stability analysis, resistance and power prediction, as well as in the application of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) methods for the analysis of flow around ships. Particular emphasis is placed on the integration of different computational tools within the ship design process, the critical evaluation of obtained results, and their application to improve vessel safety, energy efficiency, economic performance, and environmental sustainability.

Outcome

The learning outcome of the course is the acquisition of theoretical and practical knowledge required for the application of modern computational tools in ship design and analysis. Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to apply knowledge of mathematics, natural sciences, and engineering principles to solve complex ship design problems, as well as to critically analyze and evaluate the results obtained through different computational methods. The student will possess practical skills in the use of modern software packages and engineering tools for hull form development and analysis, hydrostatic and hydrodynamic calculations, hull form optimization using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) methods, prediction of ship resistance and propulsion power requirements, analysis of ship motions in waves, selection of primary structural elements, and integrated ship design. Upon completion of the course, the student will be capable of selecting and applying appropriate analytical and computational methods for modeling and solving engineering problems in naval architecture, while understanding their capabilities and limitations. The student will also be able to use relevant technical and scientific literature, analyze available data, and draw sound engineering conclusions under conditions of limited or incomplete information, applying a systematic approach to ship design and optimization.

Theoretical teaching

Concepts and fundamental aspects of applying computer programs and commercial software packages for shipbuilding. During the course, the application and demonstration of the use of some basic and advanced software packages related to ship geometry, ship lines, hydrostatic and hydrodynamic calculations, optimization of ship form using CFD, prediction of engine power, construction, maneuvering, and ship behavior in waves are explained and demonstrated.

Practical teaching

Students are trained to work with existing software packages in order to solve practical engineering problems related to ship geometry, ship lines, hydrostatic and hydrodynamic calculations, optimization of ship form using CFD, prediction of engine power, construction, maneuvering, and ship behavior in waves. The instruction takes place concurrently with the Ship Design course, allowing students to apply software in their project tasks.

Attendance requirement

Exams passed in Buoyancy and Stability of Ship 2, Ship Resistance, Ship Propulsion, Ship Structures 2.
