Vehicle design is a complex process that requires satisfying many mutual opposed requirements with regards to a vehicle functional characteristics (concept design, braking, driving, suspension and steering, aerodynamics, emission, ergonomic safety, maintainability, vehicle performance monitoring . IOT and IOV, etc.), regulations, materials, used techniques, software, and technologies. Main goal of the course is to provide the basic understanding of requirements imposed to the process of a vehicle design taking into consideration the following: (a) requirements related to the vehicle as a whole and its systems, sub-systems, assemblies, parts, (b) influence of the design process steps on the vehicle’s final performance, development time and cost as well as manufacturing issues, quality of service in the vehicle lifetime, possibilities for implementation of innovative and advanced solutions, recycling etc. (c) regulations related to different vehicle’s categories. Development of students’ knowledge and skills in the field of a vehicle design is seen as a key outcome of the course to able to recognize and solve the complex problems in the field, which is the main challenge in modern vehicle design.
The main outcomes of the course are the following: a) top-down understanding of the mutual correlation between decisions made during the design process and these influences on a vehicle functional characteristics, b) to innovate the ways of the vehicle design, c) ability to analyse, understand and make proper conclusions related to different vehicle’s and its systems data, d) development abilities and practicing to work in a team, e) knowledge to identify key problems, to appropriate formulate the problems, and applicate different techniques to solve them, f) to develop verbal and written communication skills, g) to understand how to use new sophisticated tools for advanced engineering problems solving, h) to understand regulations in the field.
Theoretical teaching is divided in the 9 parts, which are related to: 1) Introduction – The vehicle design and automotive techniques development, 2) Modern vehicle design and development, 3) Design a vehicle and Manufacturability, 4) Vehicle design and its conception of building, 5) Vehicle design and powertrains, 6) Vehicle design and braking, 7) Vehicle design – influence of suspension and steering, 8) Vehicle design regarding the aerodynamic influences, 9) Vehicle design and its safety.
Students as a group work on the given project related to design of the vehicle. The key request of the project is to design the vehicle or some systems of the vehicle, taking into consideration given boundary conditions, wanted final performance and the vehicle category. Students are supposed to solve the problems, to be able to explain solutions and connect them with the given initial inputs data about the vehicle, to present the results and simulate the future vehicle functional characteristics.
There is no precondition.
